Foreign-registered vehicles

The regulations regarding the use of a foreign-registered vehicle in Denmark are complex. The Danish Tax Authority (SKAT) is responsible for the administration of these rules and offers advice. If you use a car in Denmark that is registered in your home country, under the Danish regulations you may be required to pay a special registration fee. However, it is also possible to apply for exemption from this fee (Form no.21.059EN)

You are advised to contact SKAT as soon as possible after you arrive in Denmark to become more familiar with the regulations.

As a rule, if you are resident in Denmark for less than 365 days within a 24 month period, you will be exempt from paying the fee. However, this will depend on your specific accommodation situation. The vehicle's owner is required to carry a copy of the application to drive in Denmark until SKAT has reached a decision.

If you relocate, i.e. move your permanent address to Denmark, the foreign-registered vehicle must be registered in Denmark and carry Danish number plates no later than 14 days after you relocate. When imported to this country, a registration fee is payable on new and used cars.

Before you can get Danish number plates for an imported motor vehicle, the vehicle must first be tested at a vehicle testing centre. Then you register the vehicle for valuation at SKAT. SKAT then assesses the taxable value and calculates road tax based on the vehicle's market price and original new price.

The registration fee is usually about 60% of the market value in Denmark.

Bring/submit the following:

  1. Registration form 21.016
  2. Documentation for vehicle testing / vehicle testing for import tax purposes from vehicle testing centre
  3. Registration Certificate and import tax certificate (if applicable)
  4. Receipt for payment of import tax (if purchased in a country outside the EU), if applicable
  5. Payment in the form of cash or cheque issued by a bank to cover payment of the registration fee
  6. Vehicles Customs Clearing

You are not required to pay customs duties or VAT when you import a used vehicle to Denmark which has been registered in another EU country. Exemption from VAT is conditional upon the vehicle having been driven at least 6,000 km and being more than 6 months old. Customs duty and VAT are normally payable on used cars imported from countries outside the EU. Customs duty is 10% of the invoiced price, plus freight and insurance.

Vehicle Insurance

In Denmark, you are required by law to have third party insurance on your vehicle. This insurance covers damage that may be caused to other people and their property. Danish insurance companies offer different deals and prices. Contact an insurance company for more information about insurance in Denmark.

Converting a foreign driver's licence to a Danish licence

If you have taken up residence in Denmark and have a driver's licence issued by an EU country, this is valid in Denmark and does not have to be converted to a Danish driver's licence.

If your driver's licence was issued by a country outside the EU, it must be exchanged. Exchange can take place at the Citizen Service Office no later than 14 days after your register your address in Denmark. You have to go in person to the Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice), where you will be given a form to complete.

Bring the following with you:

  • Your valid foreign driving licence
  • If you are not a Danish or Scandinavian citizen, you must bring a valid residency permit (or certificate of residence if you are an EU citizen)
  • A valid passport
  • A doctor's certificate issued by your own doctor
  • A photograph (colour or black/white) The photo must meet applicable driving licence requirements - see instructions here

You must bring a translation of your driver's license if it has not been issued with Latin characters or if a translation into German, English or French is not available. The translation must be issued by an authorised translator, or a translator approved by the Danish National police.

If you do not have a valid passport, you must bring your original baptism, name, or birth certificate, and photo identification.

Driving test

In order to exchange your foreign driver's license for a Danish driver's licence, you have to pass a driving test (both theory and practice).

However, effective from July 2009, it is not necessary to undergo a driving test when exchanging a driver's licence issued in Australia, Capitol Territory, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Russia, or Switzerland. From May 1st 2010 Brazil and Ukraine are also added to the list.
